6 Way to Avoid Emergency AC Repair

June, 16th, 2017

HVAC Tips for HomeownersThe mercury is climbing, and you have probably already switched your air conditioner on several times this season. Though the season has just begun, you may be concerned that your AC will not make it through until cooler months without breaking down. While breakdowns can and do happen, there are several things you can do ensure the best possible chance of making it through the entire summer without needing emergency AC repair.

Here are six simple things you can do now to help keep your cooling system working like it should all summer long!

Don’t Put Off Repairs

A little bit of ice build up on the evaporator coil or an unusual sound when the AC is in use may not seem like a big deal. Even minor problems like these, though, could indicate that there is something seriously wrong. To avoid breakdowns, schedule repairs as soon as you notice something isn’t quite right.

Turn Up the Thermostat

Setting your thermostat to a higher temperature means your air conditioner won’t need to work as hard. Ideally,  you should set the thermostat around 78°F during the day. For the maximum benefit, invest in a programmable thermostat that allows you to turn the temperature up during the day and while you’re sleeping and down when you’re at home and awake.

Change the Air Filter

Air conditioner air filters need to be replaced at least twice a year. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations. If you smoke inside your home or have pets, you may want to replace the filter more frequently.

Use the “Fan Only” Mode

If your air conditioner has a “fan only” mode, use it to take some strain off the unit’s compressor. Using the fan only mode circulates already conditioned air throughout your home.

Keep Blinds Closed During the Day

If you don’t keep your blinds or curtains closed during the day, the sun can really heat up your home and force your cooling system to work harder. Keep them closed to help your home stay cool and give your AC a break.

Check the Insulation in Your Attic

Attic insulation helps keep cool air in your home’s living areas. If you don’t have enough, your air conditioner may have to work harder to keep your home comfortable.
