HVAC Tips for Homeowners
May, 19th, 2017
Your HVAC system plays a huge role in keeping you and your family safe and comfortable throughout the year. From keeping you cool in the summer and toasty warm in the winter to removing harmful contaminants from the air you breath, you rely on it for a lot.
The best way to ensure that your HVAC system will provide you with several years of reliable service is to properly maintain it. HVAC maintenance isn’t difficult, and there are several tasks that you can handle on your own. Of course, Corley is always there to help with your more in-depth HVAC needs!
Here are a few HVAC tips for homeowners that can help you keep your system performing at its highest possible efficiency.
Check Your Ducts
Leaky ductwork drives up heating and cooling costs. Examine your ducts for holes and gaps periodically. If you notice any problems, tape them using special metallic tape then seal with duct mastic. Be sure to check the ducts running through places like basements, attics and garages.
Make Sure Your Air Conditioner Has Breathing Room
If you want to make sure your air conditioner works properly this summer, give it some room to breathe. The outdoor unit should have no less than 1’ of clearance on all sides. Remove leaves, dirt and debris, and trim bushes that are touching the unit. Get rid of yard toys and any other junk that is too close. If it looks like there is a lot of dirt or mud inside the unit, have it professionally cleaned.
Replace Your Filters
HVAC filters are more important than you may realize. In addition to keeping airborne particles out of the air you breathe, they help extend the system’s lifespan. When filters are clogged, they force furnaces and air conditioners to work harder, possibly resulting in premature system failure. Change your filters twice yearly or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Keep Your Vents Open
You may think that closing the vents in rooms you don’t use often is a good way to save a bit on your heating or cooling bills. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Closing vents forces the system to work harder, driving up your energy bills and reducing your HVAC system’s lifespan.
