5 Ways To Improve Indoor Air Quality

While most people are concerned with air pollution from the outdoors and have a deep desire to help with climate change, they typically fail to consider what goes on inside their home.   1. Make your home a no-smoking zone. Did you know that cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals? We know how bad it is for the outdoors, much less inside a home where air circulates around four walls. Secondhand smoke can also increase your family’s health problems, which is just another reason to stop the smoking habit in your house. Not smoking inside helps with allergies as well and makes you feel better as opposed to groggy.
  2. Open the windows.   You should open your windows on a daily basis for a few minutes to let air circulate all the way through. Opening your windows helps lower concentrations of toxic chemicals and carbon dioxide. If you are getting ready to paint your house, be sure to open the windows! Painting is only one of the many reasons pollution will suddenly peak in your home due to the chemicals. Make opening the windows a daily habit for you.
  3. Adjust your humidity levels accordingly with a moisture or humidity gauge. Any type of ideal in-home humidity levels hover around 45%. If your levels are under 30%, the moisture is extremely low in your home. If levels are over 50%, moisture is too high and can contribute to mold growth in your house. In order to increase humidity, try using a vaporizer or humidifier. To decrease humidity, open the windows, turn on a fan or air conditioner, or use a dehumidifier.
  4. Get rid of a few of your synthetic fragrances. This is a rough tip to give because who doesn’t love their Febreeze, Lysol, and so on? But these fragrances are in so many things in our home — perfume, hand soap, cleaning products. Research has shown that a lot of the gasses emitted from these products are actually harmful. Has anyone ever told you to let your bathroom cleaning products sit for a while before you start scrubbing? Here’s a rule of thumb: if you can’t breathe well because of the strength of the cleaning product, get rid of it immediately.
  5. Clean your house. You don’t have to do a “spring clean” every month, but you should sweep through the house at least once a week. Dust build up is not good to have for your home’s air quality, especially if you have indoor animals. Try to sweep and vacuum once a week, take your shoes off before you walk inside the house, and wipe down furniture as much as necessary.
