Fixing a Bathtub Drain Clog At Home
February, 8th, 2016
When your bathtub begins draining slower and slower, it may seem like it’s easier to just put off dealing with the problem. As long as the bathtub still drains at all, everything is fine, right? Wrong. Ignoring that slowing drain could lead to a worst-case scenario — a day when the bathtub just doesn’t drain at all. When your bathtub becomes totally clogged up, what should you do? We have a few tips to help you take care of the problem.
First, try cleaning the drain cover. Most drain covers are just held in place by a screw. Simply remove the screw and pull the cover off. You may be surprised to see just how much hair can accumulate over time. Clean all the hair and other gunk out, then replace the cover.
Grab your plunger. A black plunger with flanged edges will tend to be more efficient at this, but the red plungers will also work. Make sure your home plunger is big enough to cover the entire drain. Fill the tub with two to three inches of water, then wait for about ten minutes. Cover or plug overflow holes with a wet cloth. Place your plunger directly over the drain to create a tight vacuum, then plunge about 10 to 15 times.
Own a shop vacuum? Now’s the time to pull it out. It sounds a little bit unconventional, but trust us — sometimes it works better to pull a clog out than to push it in. Set your shop vacuum to liquid cleanup and ensure it is in suction mode. If the tub doesn’t drain easily after your first try, try again. It may take two or three attempts to get everything draining again.
Do NOT use liquid drain cleaners. We cannot emphasize this enough. Liquid drain cleaners are corrosive and can eat away at your pipes and drains. If you end up having to physically touch your bathtub drain, using these kinds of cleaners could cause injury. If the above methods don’t work to clear your drain clog, don’t pull out the liquid drain cleaner — call a professional.
