While many trends come and go at the speed of light, one that we’re thankful is sticking around is the shift toward more ecofriendly and energy efficient lifestyles. People are recycling more, remembering to turn off their lights, and buying products that are safe for the earth. As you make the switch to an eco-friendly lifestyle, don’t forget to update your home’s plumbing to be just as efficient as you are!
Energy Efficient Plumbing
If your home is a little older (meaning it was built in the early 90s or before), and you haven’t replaced any of the original plumbing fixtures, it’s time to update to WaterSense labeled products because you are using far too much water! For example:
- Switching to a low flow showerhead can mean going from using 5-8 gallons of water per minute to using only 2-2.5 gallons of water per minute!
- High efficiency toilets use only 1.28 gallons of water per flush while older models use 1.6 (or more) gallons of water per flush!
- Your faucet could be dispensing over 2 gallons of water per minute while a water-efficient faucet only dispenses a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute. You don’t even have to replace your whole sink to reap energy efficient benefits — you can just install an aerator which will mix air in with your water which will lessen your water usage!
- If you don’t have a high efficiency washing machine you could be using 23 gallons of water per load instead of only 15. Using hot water also wastes both energy and money so make the switch to cold!
We bet you didn’t realize how much water your household actually goes through in a day, even if you do make a concious effort to turn your water off when it doesn’t necessarily need to be on and have started doing bigger loads of laundry!
