Winter’s Coming – Check Your Pipes!
November, 27th, 2012
If you live in the part of the country where the temperature drops below freezing for days and weeks and even months at a time, don’t let winter sneak up on you without making sure your pipes are insulated and you know what to do when that hard freeze happens.
Don’t take for granted that the insulation you may have put on your pipes last year is still there and that it is still in good repair. You need to make sure to check it before that first hard freeze hits because it only takes one frozen or busted pipe to cause a whole lot of problems.
You need to be sure to insulate all water supply pipes that are exposed or are on an outside wall. Look inside your garage, attic and basement for pipes that need attention. If your water tank is in your garage or near an outside wall be sure that those pipes are insulated also.
There are several things you can use to insulate your pipes. You can use insulation that is designed especially for pipes. There is also heat tape that can be used to wrap your pipes. Be sure to take the time to read the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use these products because if it isn’t used correctly, it may not work the way it should. You can also use old newspapers, straw, or even old rags. It is better to use what you have than to not use anything at all.
