Common Electrical Issues

August, 16th, 2016

You may not need a professional to help you unclog your drain or change a shower head, but when it comes to electrical issues, you may want to consult your nearest technician. Of course you can change a light bulb (however we won’t judge you if you don’t),  but dealing with electrical problems can be tricky, and dangerous. Don’t try to do it yourself! There may be some problems in your house where you believe it’s an easy fix, and while you may be right, some common problems need a professional’s care.

Flickering Lights

There are a few reasons your light bulbs are flickering; and it has nothing to do with scary stories at Halloween. You may have a loose bulb in the socket, your light fixture is faulty, or there is a problem in the circuit breaker box. If you switch the light bulb out for a new one and your lights still don’t work properly, consult a licensed electrician. You always want to call a professional for problems dealing with your breaker box or light fixture.

Circuit Breaker Problems

When a circuit is overloaded, the circuit breaker is supposed to trip. This is to inform you that you have too much electricity going into one circuit. Reload the circuits to have less electricity going into one breaker so that the breaker won’t overheat or cause a house fire. If you have an even supply of electricity going into your circuits and your breaker is still tripping, your problem may be deeper than too much electricity in the circuit. A common rule of thumb is to turn off or unplug appliances that are not in use. This saves you on your power bill as well. Even when the breaker has been shut off, power is still entering the panel. Let the licensed professionals do the work to ensure no one gets hurt, especially you!

Electrical Shocks

When you unplug an appliance or simply touch your toaster and you feel a shock, you may be dealing with a ground fault in the appliance or improper electrical wiring. A ground fault is an unintentional electrical path between a power source and a grounded surface. They occur when equipment is damaged and electrical parts aren’t protected from unintended contact, resulting in a shock. Electrical shocks are different and much more severe than typical static electricity and need to be handled immediately.

Do you have a GFCI Outlet, but it doesn’t work? GFCI outlets are designed to protect you from major harm and thankfully they work. There could be a problem with the plug not being grounded correctly, and there could also be a problem with overloaded circuits as mentioned above. The difference is that a GFCI outlet will trip itself instead of the circuit in the breaker box. An electrician is the best one to address this problem.

Hot Celling Fixtures

Just because a chandelier holds a lot of light bulbs close to the ceiling doesn’t mean it should overheat. If you are experiencing problems with hot ceiling fixtures, check to make sure you didn’t exceed the maximum wattage recommended for the light bulbs. Try to use CFL (compact fluorescent light) or LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs for your light fixtures, as these bulbs are made to no produce as much heat as incandescent bulbs.

Electrical Outlets Won’t Hold Plugs

Oh no, your laptop or IPod didn’t charge again. And now you can’t lay in bed and browse the Internet or listen to your soothing tunes until you fall asleep. And that’s really sad, but bad connections because of loose or decayed wiring are more serious than your electrical devices not charging. Worn out receptacles can easily cause a spark that could catch your home on fire. If your outlets won’t hold plugs, it’s time to call an electrician.

No matter what your electrical problems may be, a Greenville SC qualified electrician will be able to take care of those problems. If you need help with electrical problems in your home, call Corey Plumbing Air Electric at 864-334-8966 for prompt and efficient service.
