4 New Year Resolutions For Your Home

January, 4th, 2016

“Buy a new home” may not be one of your New Years resolutions, but “make my home seem like new again” should be. Your home is likely your most valuable asset, but with how busy life is today, it can be hard to make the time to take care of it the way you should. Put your home back at the top of your priorities list this year with these tips to start fresh, safe, and responsible in 2016.

#4.) Clear the Clutter

  • Sort. Get 4 boxes and name them “Keep,” “Donate,” “Sell,” and “Trash.” As you start cleaning and clearing the clutter, sort your items into these boxes to keep everything straight.
  • Categorize. Take care of one room at a time and start with items you know can go straight into your trash box. In the kitchen? Start in the pantry and throw out everything you know has expired.
  • Reward. Sometimes it can be hard to find the motitivation to keep going. If you reward yourself after you finish each room, you’ll have something to look forward to and you’ll stay motivated.

#3.) Go Green

#2.) Prepare for Emergencies

  • If a pipe bursts, know where your main water valve is and how to turn off your water.
  • Put together emergency kits for you home and car containing:
    • A 3-day supply of food and water (one gallon of water per person per day)
    • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • First aid kit
    • Whistle to signal for help
    • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air, and plastic sheeting and duct tape to hold in place
    • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation
    • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
    • Manual can opener for food
    • Local maps
    • Emergency cell phone and charger
  • Install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector and learn the signs of CO poisoning.
  • Store fire extinguishers in places you’d likely need them (your car, garage, kitchen, etc.)
  • Check the batteries in your smoke detector.

#1.) Invest in a Maintenance Plan

Keep your HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems running smoothly with regular maintenance, and catch tiny problems before they become devastating disasters. Our Service Partner Plan (SPP) has 3 tiers with 4 total preventative maintenance packages for you to choose from: Bronze HVAC, Bronze Plumbing and Electrical, Gold Comprehensive, and Platinum Comprehensive. The 4 packages offer varying levels of service so you can choose whether you want just the essentials, full coverage, or something in between.

Maintenance Plans may seem expensive but you have to ask yourself, “Would I rather pay $19-$49 a month to keep my home running smoothly, or thousands of dollars with no warning for a whole new system?”
