Is your A/C ready to keep you cool?

April, 22nd, 2014

Summer is here and you’re wondering what you can do to maintain your air conditioning unit (A/C) for the hot summer months to come. If you consider yourself a handyman or handywoman, there are a few things that you can do to help ensure a working A/C and a cool home this summer.

Air conditioning tune-up

Maintaining clean air filters is one of the most neglected tasks when it comes to air conditioners. It is also one of the most important tasks that needs done. You should clean or change your air filters regularly. Some units have replaceable filters that you can be purchased at most any hardware or department store. Do your research before buying one because there are many different types of filters to choose from, and you want to get the one that is going to work best for you. Permanent filters simply need to be cleaned thoroughly and put back in.

Find your air intake vents and make sure they aren’t blocked by anything. If the air can’t easily flow into the vent(s) it will make it much harder to keep your home cool and comfortable.

Weather-striping or caulking all of your windows and doors is another task that will help your A/C unit. If the cool air is able to escape to the outdoors, your A/C will have to harder to replace the cool air that escaped.

Check your air ducts and other hoses for holes, cracks, and general wear and tear. It doesn’t matter how big or small they are, it will put undue stress on your A/C.

Did you know that adjusting the temperature one degree either way on your thermostat can make a 4 percent difference in your energy consumption? Take some time to find what the highest comfortable temperature is for you and leave it set on that temperature for the summer.

There are many things you can do yourself to help keep your air conditioning unit running more smoothly this summer; however, nothing takes the place of having it professionally serviced annually. A licensed HVAC contractor can do all the necessary routine maintenance and repair any small hidden problems before they become big costly ones.
