Money-Saving Tips From Your Grandparents

April, 16th, 2015

Americans love the newest and most innovative products. High-efficiency washers and dryers, the newest stainless steel refrigerators, dishwashers that run in less than half an hour… Sometimes, though, the newest ideas aren’t necessarily the best. Some of those “old fashioned” household habits your grandparents utilized are worth picking back up, especially when it means saving money on your energy bills.

Do you really need to use your dryer? Washers and dryers were considered a household miracle when they were introduced, but we don’t always need them. Consider putting up a clothesline (you can cheaply buy a removable one if you don’t like the idea of a permanent one in the backyard). On sunny days, hang your clothes to dry instead of running the dryer. You’ll save money on energy use and may find that clothing thought would shrink keeps it shape. Plus, you’ll get that wonderful “fresh laundry” smell that your fabric softener sheets are trying to mimic!
Consider making your own cleaning supplies. When cleaning your home, you’re spending extra cash on chemicals; you can make you own equally effective cleaning solutions at home, often with items already in the pantry. Martha Stewart has many ideas on her website for DIY home cleaning agents. You’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish with lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda. You can even still get that lavender scent by picking up some lavender essential oils. Keep your home naturally clean and save money!

Lose the expensive “scent release” plugins and create your own custom home scent! Grandma knew that when company was coming, the home needed to look and smell nice, but you don’t need expensive scented candles or plugins for that. Just fill a small saucepan about ⅔ of the way with water and add 1 cinnamon stick, 2 sprigs of rosemary, a few drops of vanilla extract, and a couple of lemon slices. Bring to a boil and then leave to simmer on very low, adding water as it evaporates, for a couple of hours while you get everything else and clean and ready. By the time company arrives, your home will smell amazing – and you’ll have spent only pennies to make it happen.

One more tip it’s worth keeping in mind? Catching a little problem before it becomes a big one. We live such busy lives now that it can be easy to ignore a knocking sound coming from your HVAC unit or what you hope is a tiny leak in your pipes, as long as everything seems to be working well enough to get by. If you wait too long, though, you might end up with a very expensive mess. Make sure you get your HVAC and plumbing systems checked on regularly. If you join the Service Partner Plan here at Corley, you’ll get two checkups each year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.
