What You Need to Know About Programmable Thermostats

October, 30th, 2015

Whenever we post a blog about tips and tricks to try in your home to stay comfortable or save money, we mention using a programmable thermostat. After all this time you may be thinking, “Okay, but what is a programmable thermostat?” or “I already have to program the temperature on my thermostat, what’s the difference?” While you may think you have all the control you need with your “current” thermostat, you may be surprised to learn…

Quick Facts About Programmable Thermostats

  • Programmable thermostats are programmed once, then you never have to touch them again (unless you want to). You set the temperature you want your home to be while you’re home, you set the temperature you want your home to be while you’re away, then you’re done!
  • There are 3 different programmable thermostat types you can choose from:
    • 5-2 programming lets you have a set of temperatures programmed for Monday – Friday with a separate set of temperatures programmed for the weekend.
    • 5-1-1 programming allows for a Monday – Friday setting with individual settings for Saturday and Sunday
    • 7-day programming provides the most flexible scheduling which allows you to set a different set of temperatures for every day of the week
  • If you set one set of temperatures and leave your thermostat alone for extended periods of time, you’ll save far more money than if you try to micromanage your thermostat

If this all sounds great but you aren’t sure what temperatures you should be setting your programmable thermostat to, don’t worry — we’ve already covered that! Once you’ve set your temperatures, you’re good to go until the season changes. Speaking of season changes, fall is just around the corner! If you have not already done so, you should schedule a fall tune-up to guarantee your heating system is ready for the cooler (and downright cold) months ahead.
