Why Am I Getting Sewage Backup In My House?

August, 11th, 2015

One thing that will really ruin a good day fast is when sewage backup makes its way up your drains and into your house. The smell alone seems like it may never leave the air, there’s a terrible mess to clean up, and since whatever went wrong is happening down in the pipes underneath your home, you can’t even be sure what caused it! We here at Corley have helped our clients out more than once with sewage backups that made their way into basements or bathrooms, and we’re here to list out the most common reasons you might see backup in your home.

  • 1. Tree roots. This is actually a reason most people don’t think of. Even if the area directly above your sewer line is totally free of trees, tree roots from the neighbor’s yard could be causing your sewage backup. Tree roots can break through older piping, or may wrap entirely around your pipe and crush it.
  • 2. Broken sewer lines. While this is less likely in newer homes, it’s been known to happen with older construction. Modern or updated sewer pipes tend to be made out of heavy-duty, durable plastic, while older homes may have clay or cast iron piping that can wear, crack, and break apart over time.
  • 3. Clogs. This is the most common reason for smaller sewage backups, and luckily the easiest to fix. Putting large amounts down the garbage disposal, flushing inappropriate objects, or pouring grease and fat down the drain can all cause serious clogging which can cause serious backups.

What should I do if I have sewage backup coming into my home? That’s an easy question to answer – call in a professional. Trying to diagnose or fix the problem yourself may only make it worse, and could turn a fairly inexpensive fix into a very costly and time-consuming repair. Corley’s service technicians can come in and see if it’s only a clog or if you’re looking at a sewer line break, and will walk you through the fix and what needs to be done.
